Season Changes, And Sometimes, Your Speech Does Too
A Gentle Reminder That Growth Is Part of the Process
There’s something about the shift in seasons that always gets me thinking.
Maybe it’s the way the air feels different in the morning. Maybe it’s how the garden slows down and the light shifts earlier in the evening. Whatever it is, the changing of seasons reminds me of something I’ve come to believe about speaking, too:
Sometimes, your talk has to change.
Even when it’s “done.”
Even when it used to work.
Even when you thought it was the one.
Just like we pull out different clothes as the weather shifts, our messages sometimes need a little refresh, too. And that’s not failure. That’s growth.
Letting Go of What No Longer Fits

There’s a reason you don’t wear your winter coat in July. It’s not that the coat is bad—it’s just not right for this season.
Same goes for your talk.
I’ve worked with so many speakers who’ve crafted a solid, well-structured talk that served them well… for a while. It landed. It sold. It resonated. But eventually, it didn’t feel quite right anymore.
Maybe the audience changed.
Maybe you changed.
Maybe the message evolved.
Whatever it is, something that once fit like a glove now feels a little tight around the edges.
And that’s your sign.
A Talk Should Evolve With You

Your talk is a reflection of your experiences, your beliefs, your voice. So of course it’s going to change as you do. What once felt like a breakthrough might now feel basic. What used to energize you might now feel stale.
That doesn’t mean you start from scratch every time.
But it does mean you listen to that nudge when something doesn’t feel aligned.
Sometimes it’s a small shift:
Swapping out an old story for a more current one
Updating a stat or visual to match the times
Rewriting your opener so it reflects your energy today
And sometimes it’s a full reframe.
Either way, give yourself permission to let your talk grow with you.
Change Isn’t a Step Back—It’s a Step Forward

I’ll be honest: I’ve rewritten my own talks more times than I can count. Not because they were wrong, but because they were ready to evolve.
Just like the garden knows when it’s time to rest…
Just like the trees know when to release their leaves…
You, too, will feel it when it’s time to refresh your message.
The goal is never to cling to a script.
The goal is to connect—to be relevant, real, and in relationship with your audience.
And that only happens when you’re willing to meet the moment you’re in.
So, What Season Are You In?
If your talk feels a little off lately…
If you’re having a harder time delivering it with energy…
If your audience isn’t responding like they used to…
Maybe it’s not a problem.
Maybe it’s just time for a new season.
Take a walk. Sit with your thoughts. Pull out those notecards and start jotting again. You might be surprised at what new clarity is ready to emerge.
